Program Overview


Our engineering series takes students from novices to confident creators. Each lesson builds on the last, introducing new concepts, tools, and challenges. Students work both independently and collaboratively, learning to think like engineers and solve real-world problems.

Duration: 8 sessions, 2 hours each
Cost: 100% Free
Materials: All provided (participants should bring their computer if they have one, but if not we are able to provide one)
Format: In-person with virtual guest sessions on select days

Curriculum


Lesson 1

Welcome to Engineering

Activities:

  • Introduction to engineering - what is it really?
  • Pre-assessment survey to gauge baseline knowledge
  • Meet the UpDraft Engineering team and program objectives
  • Interactive Kahoot game to break the ice

Goal: Build excitement and establish foundational understanding

Lesson 2

Engineering Careers & Real-World Impact

Activities:

  • Overview of different engineering disciplines (mechanical, electrical, civil, software, biomedical, etc.)
  • Vote for favorite engineering field
  • Robot demonstration to show engineering in action
  • Introduction to sustainable engineering and social impact

Goal: Explore the breadth of engineering careers and inspire passion

Lesson 3

Build First Guided Project

Activities:

  • Choose between two projects: Solar Oven or Biomedical Hand
  • Learn design thinking and planning process
  • Build using readily available materials
  • Test and iterate on your design

Goal: Experience hands-on engineering design and problem-solving

Lesson 4

Introduction to Software Engineering

Activities:

  • What is coding? Understanding software engineering
  • Introduction to Scratch programming
  • Code.org DanceLab project - create an interactive dance routine
  • Explore how software powers everyday technology

Goal: Demystify coding and build first interactive program

Lesson 5

Meet a Real Engineer

Activities:

  • In-person visit from working engineer
  • Hands-on activity led by guest speaker
  • Q&A session - ask anything about engineering careers
  • Learn about day-to-day life as an engineer

Goal: Connect learning to real careers and build professional network

Lesson 6

Virtual STEM Panel

Activities:

  • Virtual panel with Reed College and KFAI staff
  • Learn about college engineering programs
  • Understand pathways to STEM careers
  • Q&A about college admissions, scholarships, and opportunities

Goal: Understand educational pathways and opportunities

Lesson 7

Choice Project Planning

Activities:

  • Choose your passion project based on interests
  • Write project proposal and plan
  • Identify materials and tools needed
  • Create project timeline and milestones

Goal: Apply engineering design process to independent project

Lessons 8-9

Choice Project Build

Activities:

  • Build your choice project (robotics kit, DIY electronics, etc.)
  • Troubleshoot problems and iterate on design
  • Receive mentorship and technical support
  • Document your process and learnings

Goal: Execute independent engineering project from concept to completion

Lesson 10

Project Presentations & Celebration

Activities:

  • Present your project to the group
  • Demonstrate what you built and what you learned
  • Celebrate successes with prizes and recognition
  • Peer feedback and appreciation

Goal: Develop presentation skills and celebrate achievements

Lesson 11

Looking Ahead

Activities:

  • Explore future career paths in engineering
  • Ongoing mentorship opportunities
  • College preparation resources
  • Introduction to UpDraft Engineering YouTube channel for continued learning

Goal: Provide resources and support for continued STEM journey
